Las Vegas in May

Looking for the best ways to enjoy Las Vegas in May?

Thinking about visiting Las Vegas in May? Great choice. May is one of those sweet-spot months in Vegas where the weather is warming up, the pool scene is just getting started, and the city is buzzing with some seriously fun events.

It’s not quite summer yet, which means you get a lot of the fun without the brutal peak-heat that comes in early June and July (with temperatures around 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, on average).

Las Vegas in May gives you a little bit of everything: there are lots of outdoor day trips you can take, festival season is just starting, and you can feel that energy in the city, and you can experience world-class shows and the beginning of pool party season. Here’s everything you need to know to plan an unforgettable trip in May!

Short on Time?

From pool parties to festivals, Las Vegas in May is packed, but if you do only three things, make them these:

  • Visit Hoover Dam. It’s one of the most impressive engineering feats in the world. May is ideal for exploring it before the summer heat peaks, and it pairs perfectly with a stop in charming Boulder City.
  • Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon! The weather in Las Vegas in May is really nice and makes outdoor adventures so much more enjoyable than visiting during the scorching summer months.
  • Make the drive to Zion National Park. Just 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, May is one of the best times to see the canyon walls, blooming wildflowers, and iconic trails like Angels Landing and The Narrows.

Las Vegas Weather in May

Las Vegas Temperature in May

May is when Vegas starts to experience warmer weather, and the temperatures are honestly some of the most pleasant you’ll find all year.

Daytime highs typically range from 85°F to 100°F (29°C to 38°C), and it genuinely feels great compared to the 115°F+ you’ll get in July. Mornings and evenings are still comfortable (and sometimes a little breezy), which makes outdoor activities and day trips feel manageable and fun.

Keep in mind, Las Vegas temps in May do start to creep upward toward the end of the month, especially around Memorial Day weekend, so it’s good to plan your outdoor activities for the morning or early evening.

The dry desert air means you’ll feel thirsty faster than you expect, so make sure you keep a water bottle with you at all times. Hydrate, wear sunscreen, and you’ll be completely fine!

What Do You Wear in Vegas in May?

May in Vegas calls for light, breathable layers. During the day, think sundresses, shorts, linen pants, and short-sleeve tops. Really, anything in a lightweight fabric that won’t trap heat! Evenings can still be on the cooler side earlier in the month, so I recommend packing a light jacket or cardigan in your bag.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must (you will be walking around 10k steps/day on the Strip!), and a good pair of sunglasses and a hat will be your best friends during any outdoor time. Don’t forget sunscreen, as the desert sun is no joke, even in May!

Things to Do in Las Vegas in May

In May, the pool scene is ramping up, major festivals are hitting the city, and the weather is warm enough to enjoy the outdoors without feeling completely drained. There’s really something for everyone.

Below is a breakdown of the best things to do in Las Vegas in May, from epic pool parties to one-of-a-kind festivals I recommend!

Pool Parties

May is the unofficial kickoff of pool party season in Las Vegas, and honestly, it might be the best time to experience it. The water is refreshing, the sun is out, and the crowds haven’t fully hit the summer peak yet. Most of the major day clubs open up in May, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from depending on the vibe you’re after.

Here are some of the best pool parties and day clubs to check out in Las Vegas in May:

Encore Beach Club (Encore at Wynn Las Vegas)

Encore Beach Club is one of the most iconic pool party venues in Las Vegas. The space is stunning and luxurious: think cabanas, crystal-clear pools, and some of the biggest DJs in the world on the decks..

Encore Beach Club is a premium experience, and is great for dancing the afternoon away or just enjoying live music with cocktails. Book your tickets (and cabanas!) in advance, because this place fills up fast even in May.

Marquee Dayclub (The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas)

Marquee Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan is another Vegas staple for pool parties, and it’s a fantastic option in May. The venue has multiple pools, a stunning backdrop of the Strip, and a consistently great lineup of DJs and performers (be sure to check online for the scheduled DJs!).

The crowd here tends to be super fun and energetic, and it’s conveniently located inside The Cosmopolitan. You can easily transition from pool time to dinner or the casino without much effort. Grab your tickets in advance for the best rates!

TAO Beach (The Venetian Las Vegas)

TAO Beach at The Venetian is a rooftop pool experience that feels a little more elevated and intimate than some of the larger day clubs. The views are gorgeous, the service is excellent, and the vibe is also luxurious. It’s a great pick if you want the pool party experience without it feeling totally overwhelmed with crowds.

May is a perfect time to visit before the summer rush, and their specialty cocktails are absolutely worth the money.

Daylight Beach Club (Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino)

Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay is one of the most spacious outdoor pool venues in Vegas, and it feels like a resort. The wave pool and lazy river set it apart from other day clubs on the Strip, and it usually attracts a mix of locals and visitors.

AYU Dayclub (Resorts World Las Vegas)

People, cars, and trees outside the Resorts World Las Vegas buildings.

AYU Dayclub at Resorts World Las Vegas is one of the newer additions to the Vegas pool party scene, and it is quickly making a name for itself. The space is modern, and the production value is high. There are some great DJs playing at the club, and the vibe at AYU leans more upscale. Definitely a pool party to add to your May itinerary!

Las Vegas Events in May

May is honestly one of the most event-packed months in Las Vegas with cultural celebrations and massive music festivals. Here are some of the best events to look out for during your May visit:

Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Las Vegas knows how to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and the energy across the city on and around May 5th is really fun.

Fremont Street Experience typically hosts outdoor celebrations with live music, food, and a festive crowd, while many Mexican restaurants along the Strip and downtown put together special menus, live performances, and deals that are absolutely worth checking out.

It’s a great excuse to explore some of the Mexican dining options Las Vegas has to offer, and the communal, street-party vibe at Fremont Street makes for a really fun celebration.

Memorial Day Celebrations

Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas is a BIG deal. Hotels, clubs, and pool parties all ramp up for the long weekend, and it’s one of the most festive and fun times to be in the city all year. Expect special events at pretty much every major venue on the Strip, celebrity DJ appearances, themed pool parties, and longer hours everywhere.

Just be aware that Memorial Day weekend is also one of the busiest times of the year for Vegas. Hotels get expensive and fill up fast, so book everything in advance if you’re planning to visit during this time. The energy is worth it, but plan ahead!

Helldorado Days (Las Vegas Days)

Helldorado Days (also known as Las Vegas Days) is one of the oldest and most beloved local traditions in the city. This annual cowboy-themed festival celebrates Las Vegas’s western heritage with a rodeo, a parade, live entertainment, and tons of vendors selling food and handcrafted goods.

If you visited Vegas in December for the National Finals Rodeo, this has a similar western spirit but with a distinctly local, community feel. It’s a really refreshing contrast to the glitz of the Strip, and is honestly one of the most charming and unique things you can experience in Las Vegas in May. Highly recommend checking it out!

Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC)

If you’re into electronic music, Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) is a bucket-list event happening right in Las Vegas.

EDC is one of the largest music festivals in the world, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and it draws hundreds of thousands of people over multiple nights. The production is beyond anything you’ve ever seen, with massive stages, art installations, carnival rides, and a lineup of the biggest names in EDM.

Be warned: EDC weekend is also one of the busiest times of the year for hotels in Vegas, so hotel accommodations sell out fast.

Book your hotel and tickets well in advance (I recommend staying close to the Vegas Motor Speedway, like TownePlace Suites by Marriott Las Vegas North I-15, Golden Nugget Casino, or Homewood Suites By Hilton North Las Vegas Speedway.

The festival runs overnight, which means you’ll be partying under the stars until the sun comes up.

Punk Rock Bowling Festival

Punk Rock Bowling is a super unique event happening in Vegas in May. This multi-day festival combines live punk rock music, a bowling tournament, and a downtown street festival into one crazy weekend. Bands from across the punk, ska, and hardcore scenes perform at venues throughout downtown Las Vegas.

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of punk music, the street festival component is really fun and free to attend. The energy is high, and the crowd is awesome.

Flavors of Aloha

Flavors of Aloha is a Hawaiian food and culture festival that brings a little piece of the islands to Las Vegas. You can expect authentic Hawaiian cuisine, cultural performances, live music, and artisan vendors. It’s a really warm and welcoming event, and the food alone makes it worth a visit.

It’s a great option if you’re looking for something a bit more low-key and family-friendly during your May trip.

The Best Dam Barbeque Challenge (Boulder City)

If you’re in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend, it’s absolutely worth making the short drive to Boulder City for The Best Dam Barbeque Challenge.

This outdoor BBQ competition draws teams from across the country competing for the title of best ribs, brisket, chicken, and more. The food is incredible (I repeat, incredible), the atmosphere is festive, and it’s a genuinely fun way to spend a May afternoon.

Boulder City is a charming city and easy to pair with a visit to the Hoover Dam, making it a perfect full-day excursion from the Strip. The BBQ alone is worth the trip!

Las Vegas Aces (New Season Kick-Off)

May marks the start of the Las Vegas Aces’ WNBA season, and catching a home game is one of the most fun and underrated things you can do in Vegas right now. The Aces are one of the top teams in the league, and the energy at their games is fantastic.

Tickets are also very reasonably priced compared to other major sports events in Vegas, which makes it a great budget-friendlyish activity. Check their schedule and try to grab tickets to a home game during your May visit!

Watch Concerts and Shows in Las Vegas in May

Residencies are in full swing at this point in the year, with major artists performing at venues like T-Mobile Arena, Dolby Live at Park MGM, and Allegiant Stadium.

Everything from pop and country to hip-hop and classic rock gets represented across the Strip in May, so no matter what you’re into, there are Las Vegas shows in May worth adding to your itinerary.

Concerts in Las Vegas in May tend to sell out faster than you’d expect, so check Vegas.com or the individual venue websites for the most up-to-date listings and residency schedules once you know your travel dates. If you’re a music lover, this is genuinely one of the best times to be in the city!

Perfect Day Trips from Las Vegas in May

May is one of the absolute best months for day trips from Las Vegas. The temperatures are warm but not yet extreme, which makes outdoor exploration so much more enjoyable than it would be in the peak summer months. Here are the best day trips to take from Las Vegas in May:

Grand Canyon (South Rim)

Visiting the Grand Canyon in May is incredible. The crowds are lighter than in summer, the temperatures at the rim are very comfortable (usually in the 60s–70s°F), and the views are absolutely breathtaking. The South Rim is the most accessible from Las Vegas and offers the most dramatic views.

Renting a car allows you to explore at your own pace. I also recommend doing a helicopter tour for a completely different perspective (that’s what we did!) to see the Grand Canyon from the air.

To really get the most out of your experience, consider combining a bunch of awe-inspiring canyons into one trip, like this Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend day tour. It’s one of the best tours you can do from Vegas, period, to get the most bang for your buck.

Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam building, canyon, and river.

Hoover Dam is one of the most impressive engineering feats in the world, and May is a great time to visit. The weather is warm without being overwhelming, and the crowds are manageable. You can take a self-guided walk across the dam or join a guided tour to learn about its fascinating history and construction.

Hoover Dam pairs perfectly with a stop at Boulder City, which is just minutes away and a lovely little town to explore. It’s an easy and very rewarding half-day trip from the Strip!

Boulder City

Boulder City is a charming, quiet town compared to the Strip. In May, the weather is perfect for wandering the historic downtown, browsing local shops, and grabbing a bite at one of the casual local restaurants. It has a really cozy, welcoming small-town vibe.

The city pairs perfectly with Hoover Dam, and during Memorial Day weekend, the Best Dam Barbeque Challenge makes it an even more worthwhile stop.

Lake Mead

A lake between canyons in Nevada.

Lake Mead is perfect for a May day trip, especially if you want to get on the water. The lake is the largest reservoir in the US by volume, surrounded by beautiful desert landscapes, and May temperatures make it ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, and swimming. The water is refreshing, and the scenery is stunning.

It’s only about 30 minutes from the Strip, which makes it an easy escape that doesn’t eat up your whole day. Consider booking a sunset kayak tour in advance. Spots fill up fast, and it’s one of the most scenic ways to experience the lake!

Black Canyon

A bridge between canyons above a river in Nevada.

Black Canyon, located just below Hoover Dam, is one of the most underrated outdoor adventures near Las Vegas, and May is arguably the best time to experience it. The canyon is carved by the Colorado River, and the views are unbeatable.

You can explore it by raft tour for a scenic, relaxed float through the canyon (these tours are guided and great for all experience levels), or by kayak tour if you’re looking for something a bit more active. Both options are magical, and the towering canyon walls and hot springs along the route make it feel like a totally different world from Vegas.

Zion National Park

Zion National Park in Utah is one of the most stunning natural places in the entire country, and it’s only about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas. In May, the park is absolutely beautiful: the canyon walls glow in the warm spring light, wildflowers are blooming, and the temperatures are ideal for hiking.

Popular trails like Angels Landing and The Narrows are at their best in May, before the extreme heat of summer sets in. If you love nature, making the drive to Zion is 100% worth it and, honestly, one of the most memorable things you can do on a Las Vegas trip. I also highly recommend taking a tour for a guided experience!

Where to Stay in Las Vegas in May

May is a popular time to visit Vegas, so booking your accommodation early is definitely the smart move, especially around Memorial Day weekend and EDC. Here are some great hotel options across different budget levels:

  • Luxury: Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas If you’re looking for a truly elevated experience, the Four Seasons is unmatched. The hotel doesn’t have a casino, making it serene, luxurious, and the design of the hotel is incredible. The pool is gorgeous, and in May, it’s pure bliss. Book your stay.
  • Mid-Luxury: The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas The Cosmopolitan is one of the most stylish hotels on the Strip, and it puts you right in the heart of everything, with Marquee Dayclub on-site, incredible restaurants, and a buzzy, energetic atmosphere. Book your stay.
  • Budget: Excalibur Hotel & Casino If you want a solid, centrally located hotel without spending a fortune, Excalibur is a great pick (and one of my favorite budget-friendly hotels on the Strip!). It’s fun, accessible, and gives you easy access to the southern end of the Strip. Great value for a May visit, especially if you’re spending most of your time exploring and you’re not going to spend a lot of time in your hotel. Book your stay.
